Elif Uras 'Future Memories' Exhibition (Pera Museum)

Elif Uras ‘Gelecek Hatıraları’ Sergisi (Pera Müzesi)

Elif Uras's site-specific installation titled Double Niche, produced for the Future Memories exhibition, addresses motifs and forms referencing prehistory from a contemporary perspective. The mosaics on the floor and ceiling of the work refer to the "hands on hips" motif frequently encountered in Anatolia's traditional kilims and weavings. This motif, which evokes the female form, is a powerful cultural sign symbolizing fertility and fecundity.

The artist reinterprets the geometric border decorations commonly seen in Kütahya ceramics by transforming them into the geometric form closest to the human figure. At the center of the installation, within the niche, stands a ceramic sculpture titled Piece of Moon, created with inspiration from Neolithic period female figurines unearthed at Catalhöyük. The form production, decoration stage, and firing of the sculpture, along with the monochrome glaze application on Iznik tile tiles, were carried out at our workshop.
